Cernobbio, Lake Como – What to do
Cernobbio, the first town you meet from Como going north and towards Switzerland, has always been a famous tourist destination; many noble families in recent centuries had erected their holiday homes here, also due to the very convenient location near Como. Even today Cernobbio is an excellent choice as a place to stay and a starting point for visiting the lake area. The center of Cernobbio is characterized by a square and a very charming lakeside promenade. In Cernobbio there are two of the most famous villas on Lake Como: Villa Erba and Villa d’Este.
Villa Erba
Villa Erba is a villa that was built at the beginning of the 1900s by the noble Erba family, surrounded by a huge park, and now home to an exhibition center. The original villa is usually used for events and weddings, while the new glass complex is used for large events and fairs. The villa and the park are generally not accessible, unless events are open to the public. The villa can be admired by boat from the lake.
Villa d’Este
Villa d’Este is today one of the best known 5-star hotels in Italy. The villa was born in the late 1500s, and after passing into the hands of several families for many centuries, at the end of the 1800s it was converted into a hotel. In almost 150 years of life, the Villa d’Este hotel has hosted the most famous personalities from the world of politics, art and cinema. The hotel maintains a very classic style, in architecture and service: entering this luxurious residence is like to dive in the past.
